Younis Khan Ex-Pakistan Skipper to Mentor Afghanistan for ICC Champions Trophy 2025
Younis Khan, the former captain of Pakistan, has been appointed as a mentor for Afghanistan’s national cricket team ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) confirmed this in a recent statement, highlighting Younis’s extensive experience, including his role as batting coach in 2022.
Known for his leadership in Pakistan’s historic T20 World Cup triumph in 2009, Younis has amassed over 17,000 runs across all formats, holding the record for the most Test hundreds (34) by a Pakistan batter.
Younis will accompany the Afghan national side during a conditioning camp in Karachi starting February 19, followed by the tournament.
This move marks his return to the Afghanistan set-up after working with an expanded squad of 25 players in a training camp in Abu Dhabi.
His ability to inspire and strategize makes him a batting great whose influence could significantly boost Afghanistan’s campaign.

The decision is based on his vast experience and understanding of Pakistan conditions, which are expected to play a vital role in the team’s preparation.
Highlighting the success of appointing mentors from hosting countries during the ODI World Cup 2023 and the T20I World Cup 2024, Naseeb stated, “Assigning a talented and experienced player like Younis Khan for this mega event ensures the team is well-prepared. We wish him the best of luck in this crucial assignment.”
Younis Khan, the former Pakistan captain, has previously worked with the Afghanistan men’s team, having served as their batting coach in 2022. Now, he’s set to return as the team’s mentor for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy.
The tournament is scheduled to kick off on February 19, with Afghanistan’s first match on February 21 against South Africa at the National Stadium in Karachi, Pakistan.
This role sees Khan bringing his valuable experience to help Afghanistan as they embark on their campaign for the prestigious event.
