History of ICC Champions Trophy 2025

The ICC Champions Trophy began in 1998 as a way to make cricket more popular and bring together the best national teams in ODI formats.

The first tournament was held in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where South Africa claimed victory by beating the West Indies in the final match.

Initially, the format was simple: if teams lost, they were eliminated. Over time, the event became bigger, introducing a group stage before the knockout rounds, adding more excitement to the tournament.

In 2002, the tournament got its official name, the ICC Champions Trophy, and had a unique moment when India and Sri Lanka became winners together after rain stopped the final in Colombo twice.

The 2004 event saw the West Indies defeat England in a thrilling finish, while Australia made history by winning two times consecutively in 2006 and 2009, showing their dominance.

Pakistan’s amazing victory in 2017 at The Oval was unforgettable, as they started as the lowest-ranked team and beat their rivals, India, by 180 runs, demonstrating their unbeaten strength in the tournament.
